Book Distribution to Community Based Libraries

Capacity Building for Community Based Volunteer Library Coordinators & Book Distribution to Community Based Libraries

PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U) Nyarushanje Community Library and Empowerment Center held a training session for 13 Community Based Volunteer Library Coordinators and 12 Local Council One (LC1) Chairpersons from Nyarushanje Subcounty on Tuesday 13.09.2022. The training focused on library management, literacy promotion, child protection and safeguarding policy, hygiene and sanitation, the role of LC1 Chairpersons in community library management and the role of Community Based Volunteer Library Coordinators in management of community libraries.

The Community Based Volunteer Library Coordinators run and manage 16 community based library started by PeerLink Initiative Uganda through Nyarushanje Community Library and Empowerment Center. The Community Libraries are housed in spaces donated by community members.

On the same day 20,000 books were distributed to 16 Community Libraries. The books were donated by Africa Book Project through Enjuba Uganda Spelling Bee.

The District Inspector of Schools in charge of Nyarushanje Subcounty Ms. Gumisiriza Aidah was the Chief Guest. Other distinguished guests included Rukungiri District Community Development Officer Mr. Agaba Posias Nemesius, The Local Council 111 Chairperson Mr. Musiime Michael and the Chairperson Primary Schools Headteachers Association Nyarushanje Subcounty Mr. Mateeka Paul.

PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U) works through the Community Library Model to promote a reading culture in schools, communities and households. The Books will increase access to reading materials in the 16 community based libraries, improve the reading abilities of learners and contribute to efforts to revive a reading culture in Uganda.
